Behind The Lens with +cweeks -> 1st of October, 2005

<eXsanguinousCorpse> Welcome cweeks : ) we're very happy to have you

<Ghouldaddy> OK everyone, welcome to Behind the Lens, we're about to start, please have your questions ready!

<cweeks> i'm happy to be here!

<eXsanguinousCorpse> Okay, wrighton363 is up first : )

<wrighton363> cweeks: Let's go back to the moment when you're looking through the viewfinder. Just before pressing the shutter-release button, what makes you think : "This is the right picture"?

<cweeks> hmm ... when it all feels right and just works in the rectangle
<cweeks> i try to imagine what i want to see ... and ... sometimes it all comes together
<cweeks> when it doesn't though ... it's just as important

<flumpie> noting the little details and framing them

<cweeks> ah ... psycho boy and his poor-ass girlfriend
<cweeks> my dad was across the table from me when i made that
<cweeks> i think i'm done
<cweeks> don't know how to bold

<Ghouldaddy> :D
<Ghouldaddy> it's all good

<eXsanguinousCorpse> Okay brainpixels is up : )

<cweeks> Ghouldaddy: that's really too much to remember
<cweeks> i make photos

<brainpixels> hi chris.. what does it feel like.. photograph tom cruise's "oh everything's so great"-grin on every fucking premiere, no matter what the weather and everything is like ;) [too "serious" question .. you know haha] - Have a nice day! ( & thx for the feature two weeks ago!! )

<flumpie> Tom

<cweeks> brainpixels: it's rather surreal ... there are so many people that will never stand right the fuck there ... and ... there i am amidst all the body guards
<cweeks> the scientologists
<cweeks> the publicists
<cweeks> and ... i just want that one photo that's going make the editors happy
<cweeks> that thumb that was just posted ... once i had that ... in colour, of course, i knew i could go play with my leicas
<cweeks> beyond what the media says ... tom is very nice
<cweeks> over-the-fucking-top, yes, but definitely nice
<cweeks> done
<cweeks> Ghouldaddy: i remembered how!

<Ghouldaddy> weeee

<eXsanguinousCorpse> okay derjukee is up : )

<flumpie>

<Ghouldaddy> she really does need to be saved from him... :fear:

<derjukee> What type of photography do you enjoy shooting most (celebrities, street, studio, etc.)? Also, what drew you to Hollywood photography?

<cweeks> you have no idea

<Ghouldaddy> Yeah chris, what makes you tick

<cweeks> my favourite type is photographing my daughter as she's grown up
<cweeks> but ... street ... that's my love
<cweeks> there's just so much random chaos going on

<flumpie>

<cweeks> getting a good frame from the street ... ah ... it feels like a drug
<cweeks> flumpie: i like the one with my daughter and her dog with the dog's ear covering her eye
<cweeks> ;)
<cweeks> what drew me to hollywood?

<flumpie> cweeks: i'll find it.. and yay for street  :)

<cweeks> hmm ... it was a fluke
<cweeks> i was shooting a lot of lifestyle and the assignments kinda crossed ... lifestyle and hollywood

<flumpie>

<cweeks> then i got a call from an agent in hollywood and ... well ... it's been about 6 years now
<cweeks> it's fun as hell
<cweeks> one gets no sleep though

<Ghouldaddy> sleep is overated

<cweeks> done

<eXsanguinousCorpse> okey Kuster is up : )

<cweeks> yes, sleep is way overrated

<kuster> I was wondering how you got your start, what your first assignments where and whatnot

<cweeks> my start ... my very first start was in junior high and i shot for our local newspaper
<cweeks> i assisted for what seems like it was a long ass time
<cweeks> i assisted in the motorcycle and autombile ad world
<cweeks> light is light is light
<cweeks> and ... i have yet to light anything but an aston martin once
<cweeks> i prefer people
<cweeks> done

<eXsanguinousCorpse> lusitana is up : )

<cweeks> yo lusitana!
<cweeks> just so everyone knows ... there is no friggin' way i can tell the whole story of how i got started...
<cweeks> it's in a journal entry called "so you want to be a photographer"

<eXsanguinousCorpse> lusitana: question please? : )

<Ghouldaddy> Please have your questions ready!

<lusitana> Good Evening, well i am not EVEN going to bother groveling, you get enough of that ;p, so made you decide to choose photography as a career

<cweeks> yes, i did
<cweeks> i think it's more of a practice
<cweeks> because i never stop
<cweeks> i'm always learning

<flumpie>

<cweeks> and applying what i learned to what i'm going to shoot next
<cweeks> did you ask "what made you choose this?"
<cweeks> what was simple: i love making photographs
<cweeks> luckily my vision has been shared with those that hire me
<cweeks> there are so many people that don't get to do what they love for a living

<flumpie> vision shared

<cweeks> i feel very fortunate to do what i love
<cweeks> done

<Ghouldaddy> Thats so very true, people get trapped in their jobs

<eXsanguinousCorpse> okey star-rose-three : ) you're up

<cweeks> Ghouldaddy: i could easily feel trapped by hollywood ... but ... it's a nice cage

<eXsanguinousCorpse> star-rose-three: : ) your question please.

<Ghouldaddy> it's decorated better

<star-rose-three> ok what do and don't would you suggest to newbie photographers

<cweeks> Ghouldaddy: yes
<cweeks> newbies? hmm .... find out what you really love to photograph

<flumpie> a guidebook for new photographers written by chris:

<cweeks> look at the work of people ... dissect it ... find out how to perhaps do it yourself
<cweeks> find the subjects that give you the chills
<cweeks> try and define a style that suits you
<cweeks> know that you can't do everything
<cweeks> get used to hearing "NO!"
<cweeks> be able to take criticism
<cweeks> done

<Ghouldaddy> as a continuation of that chris, you mentioned that you assisted for years, is that a route you'd recommend?

<cweeks> Ghouldaddy: i think assisting in TANTA-FUCKING-MOUNT!

<Ghouldaddy> thats going to be my new word Tata-fucking-mount

<eXsanguinousCorpse> okay MyArms-YourHearse you're up

<cweeks> it may not work for everyone ... but ... those that i know have assisted ... their work usually is much better than those that didn't
<cweeks> Ghouldaddy: i never said this was PG

<MyArms-YourHearse> Hey cweeks.. since I'm planning on maybe becomming a professional photographer in the future, which is quite far away tho, I'd like to ask you whether you have any special education or if you think it could be useful? Besides, what equipment do you have and do you think it's important for a good shot?

<flumpie> this isn't meant to be PG

<cweeks> education can help
<cweeks> i'm not really sure though
<cweeks> i know a lot of people that went to brooks and they can't shoot their way out of a friggin' box
<cweeks> is equipment important?
<cweeks> not really
<cweeks> a photographer should be able to make a photo with any camera
<cweeks> terry richards used point and shoot throw aways
<cweeks> i just happen to want to use equipment that never fails me

<flumpie>

<cweeks> i mean ... holga's are cheap as shit ... and their lenses suck ... but i've seen amazing shit done with them
<cweeks> ~Trueblood has done amazing stuff with them

<Ghouldaddy> :worship: holga

<cweeks> melissa and one of my loves
<cweeks> done

<Ghouldaddy> good question MyArms-YourHearse, get the whole tool versus talent question taken care of by a pro.

<eXsanguinousCorpse> Bennybeee: you're up

<Bennybeee> cweeks: what colour are your.. nvm.. lol seriously... What kinds of foods do you induce that gives you the winning edge over other pros on thy street? btw, you're doing a great job flumpie, i'm proud. ;)

<cweeks> a winning edge over other pros?
<cweeks> self-promotion, being a photographer/publicist ... and being easy to work with
<cweeks> a lot of artists are really shy ... they don't know business ... and i gotta turn down this air conditioning

<Ghouldaddy>

<eXsanguinousCorpse> :giggle:

<flumpie> getting close to the subjects is also helpful I guess

<Ghouldaddy> I think Bennybeee was actually reffering to food, as in what you eat?

<cweeks> i know other photographers that i consider better than i am ... but ... they don't have the attitude to take it to the next level
<cweeks> i'm always close
<cweeks> ;)
<cweeks> what food?
<cweeks> hummus, turkish salad and pita

<flumpie> eating out?

<cweeks> a wedge of iceberg lettuce and bleu cheese
<cweeks> in-n-out
<cweeks> sadly
<cweeks> but whatever ... i have a fucked up sched and i have to eat when i can sometimes
<cweeks> done

<eXsanguinousCorpse>
<eXsanguinousCorpse> hehe
<eXsanguinousCorpse> otay hakfest :w00t:

<hakfest> Is Petits Filous available in America? (Tom Cruise is blatantly taking cocaine, no one is that happy. I mean did you see him on Oprah, ridiculous)

<cweeks> yo hak! tom cruise doesn't do drugs
<cweeks> i saw him on oprah
<cweeks> he's just very over the top and not very inhibited

<flumpie> More Tom

<cweeks> i wish i could tell a story i heard ... but ... it really wouldn't be appropriate here! ;)
<cweeks> tom loved that photo
<cweeks> so did katie
<cweeks> is that really it hakfest? i expected so much more than that

<Ghouldaddy> Due to time constraints, the waiting que is going to close shortly. So ask now or forever hold your peace

<cweeks> still love to know who sent you the screen shots you posted! ;)

<Ghouldaddy> heh

<cweeks> i actually really like hakfests work!
<cweeks> i also love to give the dude shit
<cweeks> the photo of the dad on big ben ROCKS OUT WITH IT'S COCK OUT!

<Ghouldaddy> he takes it well though

<cweeks> Ghouldaddy: i'm sure
<cweeks> plus he plays hold 'em!

<Ghouldaddy> :giggle:

<flumpie> Big Ben

<Ghouldaddy> OK next up...

<cweeks> great photo!!!!!!!!
<cweeks> LOVE IT!

<eXsanguinousCorpse> okaty vitriolata~

<Ghouldaddy> oh oh

<flumpie>

<vitriolata> What is the point of a 'behind the lens'? Moreover, why don't you just come into #photographers sometime and we can annoy you with questions in a more informal environment? You know... where everyone can talk. Also, what is the meaning of life?
<vitriolata>

<cweeks> i've been in there ... once
<cweeks> ;)
<cweeks> meaning of life?
<cweeks> being a father, quite actually

<Ghouldaddy>

<cweeks> it's taught me more about who i am than anything else
<cweeks> i'll come into that chatroom once in a while
<cweeks> promise
<cweeks> done

<Ghouldaddy> for those wondering..

<eXsanguinousCorpse> okeydokey bule you're up

<Ghouldaddy> we've tried to put this chat with chris together for some time

<cweeks> piotr!

<bule> hey chris. when did you pick up your first leica, which one was it and why did you pick it up? and also, what's the furthest place in the world you know your photographs have been featured?

<cweeks> yo brother!
<cweeks> my first leica was ... i think '01 ... before that i was using a contax rangefinder

<flumpie> Noctilux goodness

<cweeks> the contax's manual focus capabilities blew
<cweeks> and ... their selection of lenses got to be too slow
<cweeks> bought an m6 and 35/1.4 summilux ... and ... ah ... just ... AHHHHH....
<cweeks> my work has been everywhere
<cweeks> i continually get tear sheets from places ... well ... i don't even know what languages those were
<cweeks> done
<cweeks> flumpie ... great choice ... i love that lens
<cweeks> i'd make love to that lens if i could

<eXsanguinousCorpse> T110MAS you're up : )

<Ghouldaddy>

<T110MAS> hi chris. you may not be able to answer this, but would you say that america is the best place for "future photographers", in terms of the amount of jobs available? also, will this whole chat thing be saved by anyone so we can refer back cos i got a bit lost half way through?!

<flumpie> cweeks: when I grow up I want a leica too :giggle:

<cweeks> flumpie: me too
<cweeks> T110MAS: yo

<Ghouldaddy> T110MAS: yepp, we will have a log

<eXsanguinousCorpse> T110MAS: yes : )

<cweeks> i know a lot of italians and french that have come here and done rather well
<cweeks> i think that, yes, america is a great place for work

<flumpie>

<cweeks> also i think that the market is more "open" than others because american art buyers tend to look at the talent rather than where someone was educated
<cweeks> i think this is being saved
<cweeks> i'm not sure but i'm sure someone is

<Ghouldaddy> yep, we are

<cweeks> done

<eXsanguinousCorpse> okey pro-amateur : )

<cweeks> carmen ... so cute ... just not that bright

<Ghouldaddy> heh

<;pro-amateur> cweeks: is most of the "famous" nice most of the time? or are they mostly angry or stuff..?

<eXsanguinousCorpse> :giggle:

<cweeks> seriously, most are very nice ... very accomodating ... we both have a job ... and some of them make that job much easier

<flumpie> Respect :worship:

<cweeks> that being said ... everyone has their moments
<cweeks> that also being said ... i can't stand meg ryan or julia roberts. ;)
<cweeks> horrible bitches
<cweeks> not even that hot in person
<cweeks> done

<Ghouldaddy> have mouths like horses
<Ghouldaddy> :paranoid:

<cweeks> true that

<opioid> :giggle:

<eXsanguinousCorpse> okay valorfive

<valorfive> Nevermind

<eXsanguinousCorpse> valorfive: : ( okay.

<cweeks> shouldn't questions be like pre-typed and ready to cut and paste?
<cweeks> copy and paste
<cweeks> whatever

<flumpie> oui

<eXsanguinousCorpse> alright then... RandomAV1 : )

<Ghouldaddy> yeah they are SUPPOSED TO BE

<RandomAV1> Chris what do you think sets your photos apart from other pros, I mean what makes a magazine , publisher, publicist pick you? Also your photography has single handedly made me want a Leica, Thanks, there goes the kids college fund!

<cweeks> RandomAV1: sorry about the college fund

<Ghouldaddy> RandomAV1: :giggle:

<cweeks> they'll understand
<cweeks> put them in debt
<cweeks> it's all good

<Ghouldaddy> make them appreciate it all the more

<flumpie> More Noctilux goodness

<opioid> college funds :cries:

<cweeks> what sets me apart is that i have a style that most of the people that commission me know just by looking at a thumbnail
<cweeks> publicists pick me because they know i'm going to nail what they need for the domestic and international weeklies
<cweeks> flumpie: brad has a nocti too

<Ghouldaddy> my respect for that man has just gropwn a thousand fold

<cweeks> i mean ... these editors see 10's of 1,000's of photos per week
<cweeks> i just make sure they know that the small percentage that are mine ... they know are mine
<cweeks> go buy the leica, mate
<cweeks> you won't regret it
<cweeks> Ghouldaddy: brad has an extensive leica system ... both the m and the r

<flumpie> you rock Brad

<Ghouldaddy> damn..

<cweeks> he's also one of the coolest people in hollywood
<cweeks> and banging the hottest one
<cweeks> sorry jen
<cweeks> you're not that hot
<cweeks> ;)

<Ghouldaddy> great camera, hottest woman on the planet and a guinness pub in his house

<eXsanguinousCorpse> I an even bigger crush on brad now :D

<cweeks> he's a huge collector of photography as well
<cweeks> mostly b/w work

<flumpie> More Nocti goodness

<cweeks> that photo still freaks me out
<cweeks> i think i'm done with that last one

<eXsanguinousCorpse> okey : )
<eXsanguinousCorpse> vendoritza, you're up : )

<vendoritza> Hey cweeks!are there any moments when u have to take photos but your emotional state doesn't feel like takeing pics(or is it that experince and pasion for photography are way ahead of the emotional state?)? if yes, how do u get pass this situation? Or how do u suggest me to get passed it?

<Ghouldaddy> vendoritza

<cweeks> there are totally days when i'm just not feeling it
<cweeks> like anyone else
<cweeks> but ... i'm getting paid for my talent and not necessarily for how i'm feeling that day
<cweeks> so ... i just put it behind me and make the photograph i was hired to make

<flumpie> We're all down at times

<cweeks> i find that when i am having a dark moment that we all, no doubt, have ...
<cweeks> actually picking up a camera ... and making a photo ... makes me feel better

<Ghouldaddy> well said

<cweeks> done
<cweeks> grazie!

<Ghouldaddy> prego

<eXsanguinousCorpse> okey Pyrple you're up : )

<cweeks> ;)

<;Pyrple> Hi cweeks  .. I want to make a living with my photos of nature, flowers mostly.so my question is, what does it take to get ones foot in the door, to get their work noticed?

<flumpie> :rose:

<cweeks> i don't know about nature ... but ... i know that there are so many stock agencies that offer
<cweeks> things like buy outs ...
<cweeks> and ... i'm not into buyouts
<cweeks> i wouldn't even know what magazines run that stuff
<cweeks> but i'm sure they do
<cweeks> what does it take to get one's foot in the door?
<cweeks> depends on the genre of what you want to shoot
<cweeks> perhaps broaden your horizons photographically
<cweeks> as flumpie pointed out, though, i like flowers once in while as well
<cweeks> i just don't license their rights
<cweeks> done

<Ghouldaddy> heh

<eXsanguinousCorpse> okay, Hellhuff :w00t:

<Hellhuff> Hey Chris. Pyrple stole my first question :shakefist:. What are your "photography rules" that you shoot by, or do you have any? I now want a Leica, now all I need is the money.

<cweeks> Hellhuff: are there any rules?

<Ghouldaddy> Hellhuff: sell yourself ..it will be worth it

<cweeks> visa or mastercard

<flumpie> shoot at the street, don't sell yourself there

<cweeks> don't sell yourself on the street for a leica
<cweeks> that would be bad
<cweeks> i don't really adhere to rules, per se
<cweeks> done

<eXsanguinousCorpse> okey you are up bitbeat :D

<Ghouldaddy> what I meant by sell youself was take a comercial aspect and make it work towards your goals

<bitbeat> mmm , well I saw one of your last photos, the one of the indi guy over the counter...how many king sized packs of reeses do you take every day ? and...how much socializing do you do while taking photos, do you like have long talks with all the models and artists or just try to be "invisible" to take those great photos?

<flumpie> Ghouldaddy: yeah right :p

<bitbeat> :)

<cweeks> great question
<cweeks> i have one king size reeses every ten days or so

<flumpie>

<cweeks> even though the chihuahua actually got one out of that particular pack
<cweeks> socializing with your subjects is very important
<cweeks> i think the shy timid photographers are the ones that have it the worst when trying to make photos of people

<bzed> :boogie:

<flumpie> Meeting cool people, camera in hand

<cweeks> yes, i've had very long talks with models, bums, a-listers, news casters, billionaires, etc., etc.
<cweeks> in the street, though, i'm stealth
<cweeks> they don't even know it's happening. ;)
<cweeks> so ... there's a time and place for being talkative and friendly and silent and deadly
<cweeks> ;)
<cweeks> done

<Ghouldaddy> yes it was a great question and for that great question bitbeat gets a 3 month sub!

<flumpie> stealthy streetshot

<eXsanguinousCorpse> :D congrats bitbeat!
<eXsanguinousCorpse> okay MyArms-YourHearse

<cweeks> Ghouldaddy: pick the best question and i'll give them a print

<MyArms-YourHearse> okay, me again :) cweeks: since i've heard from some other photographers that they think like that: do you think post-processing is betrayal? and, a last one and you're rid of me: how does it feel like to be one of the few photographers on the red carpet? do you feel privileged or is it just another job for you? (still drooling over the noctilux-lens-flare-pic  )

<Ghouldaddy> cweeks: :salute:

<MyArms-YourHearse> damn, that was long

<cweeks> MyArms-YourHearse: it's all good
<cweeks> i don't do anything in PS that i couldn't have done in a darkroom
<cweeks> anything above and beyond that is manip
<cweeks> it feels surreal
<cweeks> there are 50-70 line photographers that look at me and i'm sure they hate me because i'm roaming
<cweeks> but ... what's expected of me is quite different than what's expected of them
<cweeks> i'm ALWAYS expected to get "the shot"
<cweeks> it's never just "another job."
<cweeks> i love what i do

<flumpie> "the shot"

<cweeks> i'm very lucky and fortunate
<cweeks> that shot ran -- in colour, of course -- so much it's sick

<Ghouldaddy> love that shot

<cweeks> and ... i didn't want to shoot that night
<cweeks> but i did and i'm glad that i did
<cweeks> done

<flumpie> the rest of the world is as well ;)

<opioid> natalie

<Ghouldaddy> yepp

<cweeks> ah ... thank you

<eXsanguinousCorpse> okey paroxysmic :D

<;paroxysmic> Hello Chris! Has your career (and schedule) affected your social life in a bad way? Is it hard on your family sometimes? Thanks!

<cweeks> mike has a question!!!!! ;)
<cweeks> if i didn't have my daughter, i'd be in rehab

<Ghouldaddy> we'll get to mike, let him sweat it out :D

<cweeks> she's like my balance

<flumpie> all that matters

<cweeks> most in this business have no personal life
<cweeks> and if they do it's cheap and ephemeral
<cweeks> i'm being dramatic
<cweeks> my daughter understands
<cweeks> she gets to meet cool people
<cweeks> get cool clothes from designers
<cweeks> and hang out with her dad shooting fashion
<cweeks> models love her
<cweeks> my own publicist LOVE-LOVE-LOVES her
<cweeks> she's amazingly cool with what i do

<Ghouldaddy> she'll have great stories for a work shadow day at school

<cweeks> that being said ... she would prefer i didn't travel to europe so much
<cweeks> Ghouldaddy: totally

<flumpie>

<cweeks> she's also dressed better than her friends. ;)

<Ghouldaddy> heh

<cweeks> i love that photo!
<cweeks> thanks flumpie
<cweeks> i have that on my wall

<flumpie> cweeks: anytime :highfive:

<cweeks> they're all still very good friends ... my daughter and the two girls in that photo
<cweeks> very good kids
<cweeks> i'm lucky
<cweeks> we're all friggin' lucky ... to be breathing our overrated share of oxygen
<cweeks> i'm always happy to wake up from sleep and know that whatever power that is ... let me wake up
<cweeks> done

<Ghouldaddy> being the sappy father that I am cweeks, I think paoxysmic deserves that print!

<cweeks> totally

<eXsanguinousCorpse> well said : )

<Ghouldaddy>

<eXsanguinousCorpse>

<Ghouldaddy> congrats paroxysmic

<flumpie>

<eXsanguinousCorpse> :D

<bzed> :boogie:

<cweeks> pao: please add the print you want to your wish list

<Ghouldaddy> he meant paroxysmic :giggle:

<eXsanguinousCorpse> next? : )

<Ghouldaddy> yep

<cweeks> paro ... please add the print to your wish list!
<cweeks> and ... note me

<eXsanguinousCorpse> okay punkin is next

<cweeks> with something other than DD

<Ghouldaddy> lmao

<reeka> Hey Chris, if you hadn't become a professional photographer, what career would you have chosen instead?

<cweeks> truck driver

<eXsanguinousCorpse> reeka: :smooch:

<Ghouldaddy> :D

<cweeks> kidding
<cweeks> um ... perhaps an attorney representing the unrepresentable
<cweeks> maybe a writer
<cweeks> a farmer
<cweeks> ;)

<Ghouldaddy> I think you'd make a great writer

<eXsanguinousCorpse>

<cweeks> i dunno .. i've had a camera to my eye since i was 8 ...
<cweeks> and i've never really looked back
<cweeks> Ghouldaddy: thank you
<cweeks> my junior year english teacher stalks my blog and he says the same thing
<cweeks> always has ctually
<cweeks> actually

<flumpie>

<cweeks> fuck
<cweeks> i just smelled that smell of grease because of that photo
<cweeks> we've boycotted that store
<cweeks> we saw flies in the case the other night
<cweeks> that's not a good thing

<eXsanguinousCorpse> eww.... :o

<flumpie> :O_o:

<cweeks> we're searching for a new store

<Ghouldaddy> ...

<eXsanguinousCorpse> ... ^^;

<cweeks> ho finito ghoul

<Ghouldaddy> :salute: next up

<cweeks> with that question not in general
<cweeks> ;)

<eXsanguinousCorpse> okey~ pebaline :ahoy: :D

<;pebaline> Hi Chris! Thanks for spending some time with us today! I find your work and especially your recent article about why we photograph really inspirational. :blowkiss: OK so, my question: If you could choose 3 celebrities and have free hands to do whatever kind of shoot you’d like to with them, who would you choose and what would you do with them? (..and are you ever going to tell us what happened between Paris and Nicole??!!) Sorry arm being twisted - hakfest also wanted me to ask besides his yoghurt question if it's uncommon for journalists to use diffusers on their flash when taking photos at premieres and the like? Sorry for being a bit long winded! ;)

<cweeks> i gotta pee like a proverbial race horse
<cweeks> you should be sorry
<cweeks> i have to pee

<Ghouldaddy> alrighty ..
<Ghouldaddy> break time

<cweeks> anyway ... what three?

<eXsanguinousCorpse> :giggle: do you wnat a break?

<cweeks> brb

<Ghouldaddy> sooo you people ahving fun?

<eXsanguinousCorpse> Yeah? : ) enjoying?

<Ghouldaddy> *having, and yes I know you're muted

<eXsanguinousCorpse> if you are dont say anything
<eXsanguinousCorpse> greeat :giggle:

<flumpie> i can thumb some shots while we wait

<Ghouldaddy> yes please

<eXsanguinousCorpse> flumpie: go for it

<cweeks> okay
<cweeks> ah ... the simple pleasures

<flumpie> my old favourite

<eXsanguinousCorpse> or not :D

<Ghouldaddy> more of the models in the lingerie
<Ghouldaddy> or not

<cweeks> i want to shoot robert downey jr in the desert
<cweeks> i want to shoot kiera knightley in a strip club

<Ghouldaddy> can I assist on that?

<cweeks> i want to shoot sharon stone with a ball gag
<cweeks> Ghouldaddy: sure

<Ghouldaddy> :w00t:

<cweeks> we'll do it in toronto ...

<bzed> cweeks: may i mount the ball gag?

<Ghouldaddy> I know just the place

<cweeks> diffusers ... on flashes ...
<cweeks> there's really no reason if you're doing line shooting
<cweeks> i do like putting CTO (1 stop) to balance against the tungsten lights they use
<cweeks> then white balancing for tungsten
<cweeks> blue-flash and red-lights look like shit

<flumpie> the dayjob

<cweeks> in fact ... i'm buying some more cto after this is over because i'm shooting an ad for a magazine in palm springs this afternoon
<cweeks> the location is a club and their light is tungsten
<cweeks> so ... i balance for what is there
<cweeks> done
<cweeks> bzed: i don't think that will fly with the publicist

<eXsanguinousCorpse> okey Mike is up~

<cweeks> ah mike
<cweeks> firefly

<Mike> haha, no luv from Ghouldaddy! ;) .... Hey Chris… So I was wondering when you're going to start shooting /submitting some nudes? And don't tell me you prefer street photography as an excuse, you can shoot nudes on the street, especially in LA. I know we all want to see Paris nakie! That was not a serious question, obviously. By the way, my commentary in the news article referring to this event was by no means meant to bash you or this room or this event, as I think you and the room staff know.

<Ghouldaddy> I was typing :P

<cweeks> mike: that's funny you should say that
<cweeks> i have shot some with the old rollei i got
<cweeks> this camera is really possessed ... i think

<Ghouldaddy> all rolleis are...

<cweeks> nudes on the street in l.a.? um ... this isn't budapest or prague, mate
<cweeks> seriously ...this camera is bringing out my inner pervert

<bzed> prague rocks

<cweeks> not that you have to be a pervert to shoot street

<flumpie>

<cweeks> bzed: Love THAT town

<bzed> cweeks: and the girls there

<cweeks> mike ...maybe i'll email you some when they're done so i can get your private thoughts first
<cweeks> bzed: those girls rock
<cweeks> mike ... i know that wasn't a bash ... totally ... we're all good
<cweeks> done

<Ghouldaddy> and now, the man with the most famous lens on da

<eXsanguinousCorpse> okey kilgore-trout :blowkiss:

<kilgore-trout> lol ghouldaddy ......hey chris -- again thanx for takin the time to stop by and do the feature with us....very much appreciated bud :D now, gettin to my question : as you stated --- you are always expected to get the shot hence the special priveledges etc etc - but have you ever had encounters where you didnt get it .... and in those situations... what ramifications do you face (if any at all ) ? besides the obvious of not getting printed ;P

<cweeks> yo fish-boy!
<cweeks> no worries ... i wanted to do this but time is just ... well ... ya know
<cweeks> do i ever not get the photo?
<cweeks> i'm knocking on wood
<cweeks> i always get it
<cweeks> that sounds arrogant ... i know
<cweeks> but ... i make sure i get it

<Ghouldaddy> it's confidence

<cweeks> i don't know the ramifications
<cweeks> i mean ... i'm sure they'd give me a break ... but ... i don't give myself a break
<cweeks> so ... i always get what the client needs ... most of the time much more than they need or want
<cweeks> thanks ghoul

<Ghouldaddy> np

<cweeks> done

<Ghouldaddy> I believe before you go, flunpie had a question as well

<eXsanguinousCorpse> okay! flumpie is the last question! :D

<Ghouldaddy> flumpie even

<eXsanguinousCorpse> Ghouldaddy: : ( i rememberered

<flumpie> Thanks for joining us here tonight Chris, it has been great. :highfive: now to my question, all streetshooters work differently.. some shoot a lot, some shoot rarely, some try to capture decisive monents, some use snap esthetique, some use tele, some like to get close, some wait for light and compositions, others hunt tirelessly, can you tell about how you do street? and which is your fav street film? tri-x or hp5+?

<cweeks> no worries, mate

<Ghouldaddy> damn you I was going to ask the film question

<cweeks> i don't really know how others shoot in the street...
<cweeks> i think whatever makes you happy with the work you're producing is good
<cweeks> i usually shoot just one roll
<cweeks> when it's street i'm after
<cweeks> i never use tele
<cweeks> street shooters should be using 35's or 50's ...
<cweeks> teles are cheating
<cweeks> anyone can do that

<flumpie> :)

<cweeks> getting up close and personal without a subject knowing it ... that's the holy grail
<cweeks> one has to know their lens/distance scale and f/stops
<cweeks> for shooting from the hip
<cweeks> or not looking thru the viewfinder and just making a photo

<bzed> or get a TLR :D

<cweeks> never used a tlr for that
<cweeks> perhaps, though

<flumpie> i like to use the viewfinder :)

<cweeks> tri-x ... not a fan for 35mm
<cweeks> medium format yes
<cweeks> i dont' like the way grain is translated by scanning
<cweeks> i don't use hp
<cweeks> i use ilford delta 400
<cweeks> agfa apx 100 and 25
<cweeks> and i'm testing efke 25 as a replacement for the apx 25

<bzed> agfa stopped the production of apx :cries:

<cweeks> i know
<cweeks> but ... i have 500 rolls in the freezer

<Ghouldaddy> bastards

<cweeks> so .. i think i'm alright

<flumpie> so that's where they went

<cweeks> there's nothing like shooting during midday with 25 iso and a noctilux wide open
<cweeks> that's where they went
<cweeks> no room for food
<cweeks> just vodka and apx 25
<cweeks> and some popsicles

<Ghouldaddy> at least the priorities are straight

<cweeks> oh ... and godiva dark chocolate ice cream
<cweeks> totally

<Ghouldaddy>:clap::clap: lets have a big round for cweeks. Thanks for coming in :clap::clap:

<eXsanguinousCorpse> okey : ) anyone else ?

<opioid>

<eXsanguinousCorpse> yay!
<eXsanguinousCorpse> thankyou cweeks

<flumpie> :highfive:

<cweeks> thank you all for coming by and asking some great questions
<cweeks> i have to pack the car

<garrit> :)

<cweeks> no assistant today
<cweeks> dammit

<eXsanguinousCorpse> cweeks: :petting:

<flumpie> happy shooting :)

<opioid> cweeks: g'luck

<bzed> cweeks: :thank you very much chris!

<cweeks> thank yoiu

<opioid> have fun anyway! :D

<cweeks> no worries ... thank you guys ... maybe we'll have to do this again ... like film vs. digital
<cweeks> ;)

<Mike> haha

<cweeks> should be fun today

<eXsanguinousCorpse> :fear: :D
